Old school shopping in Seoul
Seoul is super modern, clean, and prosperous. 👍 But some of the old ways remain, like the Namdaemun Street Market — South Korea’s oldest and largest traditional market.
With thousands of stalls, you can buy just about anything here from t-shirts, to tools, to teapots, and more. 🪣👟🎸👖🛠🕶⚽️ It may take some searching to find what you’re looking for in the extensive warrens of stalls — over 10,000 of them! 😮 But wandering and browsing through this colorful chaotic environment is all part of the fun.
Yes, there are tourists here, and if you’re looking for Korea coffee mugs or fridge magnets, you can certainly find them. But most of the market caters to locals, serving their needs in the most traditional fashion. The market has been part of daily life in this city for centuries.
Founded 610 years ago during the Joseon Dynasty, Namdaemun Market has been demolished various times (most recently during the Korean War). But it’s been rebuilt each time, and today the historic market is still going strong. 🦾😎
