Guarding the king in style
Is this the most gorgeous fortress ever? No dull grey utilitarian buildings here! I love that a military building can be so elegant and stylish. π
Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon was built for King Jeonjo in the late 1700s. The extensive walls and massive gates of the fortress are surprisingly intact. There were observation towers, arrow launching towers, and secret gates. This shows the north command center. π―
In those days, Suwon was a separate city and there would have been forests in the distance. Today, the modern city spreads far beyond the walls, and you can take the Seoul subway system to get here. π’π¬π₯
The commander’s view from this spot would have looked a lot different back in the day! π‘π³ππ
