Land of the morning calm

Modern South Korea is a vibrant, prosperous place — advanced, organized, high tech, and democratic. The country’s peaceful nickname “Land of the morning calm” belies its tumultuous past. This place has come a long way in the decades since the Korean War.
But the country’s illustrious history stretches back thousands of years. There were advanced societies here as far back as the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. It’s been invaded by the Japanese, the Mongols, and the Chinese, and its borders have shifted back and forth over time. But after all it’s been through, South Korea has emerged with a strong sense of its own identity.
From the colorful Namdaemun Market, where residents of Seoul have been shopping for over 600 years, to the lively strains of K-pop music which has spread its popularity around the world, South Korea is a glorious treat for all the senses.
